How to get your website cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini
More people now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity instead of searching Google. These tools can read websites and quote them, so being easy to find and understand matters. Nobody can guarantee a mention, but you can improve your odds.
1. Let the crawlers in
Check your robots.txt file does not block AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. If you want to be cited, allow them. Publish a sitemap too. A simple llms.txt file listing your key pages helps assistants understand your site.
2. Answer questions directly
Write pages and posts that begin with a clear answer, then add detail. Use headings that match real questions: "How much does X cost?" "What is the difference between X and Y?"
3. Be specific and original
Generic content is easy to replace. Share real examples, numbers you can back up, your process and opinions. Original information is more likely to be quoted.
4. Add structured data
Mark up your organisation, services, articles and FAQs so machines can read them reliably.
5. Keep facts consistent
Use the same business name, description, location and links on your site, social profiles and marketplaces. Mixed-up details confuse both people and machines.
6. Build trust signals
Show who is behind the site, add an about page, real testimonials and links to profiles such as Upwork or LinkedIn. Mentions on other reputable sites help too.
7. Keep it fresh
Update important pages and publish regularly. Show dates.
8. Make it fast and readable
Fast, clean pages are easier to crawl and nicer to read.
What not to do
Do not stuff keywords or hide text for machines. It does not work and can hurt you.
Check your progress
Ask the assistants questions your customers would ask and see whether your business appears. Note what they say and fill the gaps.
