How to choose the first job for your AI agent
Most teams want an AI agent to "handle customers". That is too big to build and too vague to test. A better first step is to pick one conversation that repeats every day.
A quick way to choose
Write down the five messages or calls your team answers most often. For each one, ask:
- Is the answer the same most of the time?
- Can the agent look up what it needs (a calendar, a price list, an order)?
- Is a wrong answer easy to catch and fix?
The conversation that scores "yes" three times is your first job. Booking and rescheduling, order confirmations and "what are your hours and prices?" usually come out on top.
Decide the handoff before you build
Agree up front when the agent must pass the conversation to a person: complaints, refunds, anything outside the rules you write down. A clear handoff protects customers and makes the agent safer to launch.
Measure the boring things
Once it is live, review a sample of real conversations each week and track:
- How many conversations the agent finished without help
- How many were handed to a person, and why
- Where customers repeated themselves or gave up
Fix the top issue, then widen what the agent handles. Small, steady changes beat a big launch.
